Special Session Celebrating Diversity in Mathematics

AMS Sectional Meeting

March 13-15, 2020
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA

The AMS Sectional Meeting has been CANCELLED. See here for more details.

Mathematics spans a diverse range of subdisciplines from pure directions, such as algebra, analysis, topology, and geometry, to applied directions such as mathematical physics, computation and operations research. In this session, we aim to bring together a diverse set of mathematicians researching a diverse set of problems. We define diverse in a broad sense considering field of research, type of institution from which the speakers come from as well as their rank, gender, and ethnicity. This session will underline the wide background of Mathematicians and Mathematics. Since the topics of the talks are broad, the talks will be accessible research talks aimed at a wide audience (colloquium style).

In addition, we will have a panel of faculty who have organized programs aimed at supporting and connecting students and faculty from underrepresented groups. This will include discussion of how faculty interested in organizing these programs can get information and support.

Organized by Lauren Childs (Virginia Tech), Sara Maloni (University of Virginia), Rebecca R.G. (George Mason University). More information on the AMS Sectional Meeting can be found here.
