Core Curriculum Summary for Mathematics Majors
Effective June 2003


You must take a total of approximately 12 courses (approximately 38 credit hours) from various areas of study.  The specific courses that can be applied to the requirement are listed in the Core Curriculum Guide.  Twelve of the first 36 hours that you complete must be from the Core Curriculum.  Similarly 24 of the first 72 hours must be from these courses.

Area 1.  Writing and Discourse (six hours)

You must take either Engl 1105 - 1106 or Comm 1015 - 1016 unless advanced placement credit has been earned for one of these sequences.  If partial advanced credit has been given, then you may be able to satisfy the requirement in other ways.  See the Core Curriculum Guide.

In addition, there is a ViEWS (Visual Expression, Writing and Speaking) requirement, but this is satisfied automatically by students who complete the standard requirements for the Math major.

Area 2.  Ideas, Cultural Traditions, and Values (six hours)

Most of these courses are in Art and the Humanities.

Area 3.  Society and Human Behavior (six hours)

These courses are in the Social Sciences.  Most students take Psych 2004 as the first of these courses,  because it is a prerequisite for many of the other courses.

Area 4.  Scientific Reasoning and Discovery.  (eight hours)

The College of Science requires an eight-hour sequence of a lab sciencecourse.  Most math majors take Physics 2305 - 06 because that sequence also counts as a math related sequence.

Area 5  Quantatitive and Symbolic Reasoning. (six hours)

This requirement is automatically satisfied by all math majors.

Area 6. Creativity and Aesthetic Experience (three hours required for College of Science majors)
Area 7.  Critical Issues in a Global Context.  (three hours).

Note that some of the courses listed in Area 7 also are listed in other areas of the core.  If you take one of these to satisfy a different core requirement, it also will satisfy the Area 7 requirement.

Foreign Language.  The university has a foreign language requirement equivalent to passing three years of a single foreign language in secondary school.  Students who have not done so must complete a course numbered 1106 in a foreign language.  (Note that 1106 is the second course in a sequence 1105-1106.)
